The FA Have Announced That Hartlepool United's Victoria Park Will Host England's International Friendly Against Sweden.
After we contacted The FA about a North East stadium hosting an England international or FA Women's Cup Final, we were frustrated with the response. They claimed that England played in the North of England recently". This was of course the game against Netherlands in Manchester in June 2012 and last season's FA Cup final was held in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. With Doncaster approximately 85 miles from Teesside and Manchester a little further out, this response was not good enough and felt like we were being fobbed off. We responded further to The FA with a little more passion and asking the criteria for host stadiums. We were told that stadium size was a factor based on an expected attendance and we thought that there really was no good reason for any of the three stadiums we suggested not being selected as a host venue.
The FA announced yesterday that Hartlepool United's Victoria Park will host August's friendly international against Sweden. Sweden are ranked 5th in the world by FIFA and England ranked in eighth place. England are, of course, unbeaten in their World Cup qualifying group, winning all eight games so far and only conceding their first goal in Thursday's match against Ukraine in Lviv and now need only one more point to qualify for next summer's World Cup in Canada.
While we realise that we may not have had any influence over The FA's decision to bring women's football to the Tees Valley, we are accepting it as a personal victory for the game in this region. Now, we hope that The FA will keep the North East, as a whole (not hole), in mind in future selections.
Tickets for the match are on sale now from both Hartlepool United and The FA and are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for children and concessions and the game will take place at 2pm on Sunday 3rd August.
